Dog that attacked Calgary woman surrendered by owner to bylaw for euthanasia

CANADA -- Rafah Bakour’s five-year-old son is afraid of her.

Surgery to remove skin from her neck to mend her face has left her looking very different to her son.

“He didn’t want to come to me, he was scared,” said an emotional Bakour Wednesday after returning home from an overnight stay at the Foothills hospital.

It was about 7:15 a.m. Tuesday when Bakour was walking back to her Falconridge home after dropping her daughter off at the bus stop when a pit bull from a nearby home went after her.

“The dog saw her and off it went,” said Alvin Murray, north operations manager for Calgary Animal and Bylaw Services, adding the reason may never be known.

The 16-month-old male dog was in the care of his owner’s father, as the owner had not returned home from a night shift, said Murray.

Murray said the pit bull was registered, neutered and had all of his vaccinations.

Bylaw has never had any issues with this dog, or other dogs belonging to the owner, he said.

Bakour said the dog attacked her, first biting her legs and then, once she was on the ground, biting her face before the man in charge of the dog was able to take it away.

A passerby called 911 and Bakour was taken to hospital, where she underwent surgery.

At home Wednesday, she said she is unable to walk and can’t see out of her right eye. She’s been forced to take at least three weeks off of work.

The attack is categorized as a Level 5, just below the most severe type — Level 6 — which results in death, said Murray.

He said the dog’s owner was clearly shaken up and "devastated" after seeing the photos of Bakour’s injuries and voluntarily signed the dog over for euthanasia.

The owner and his father have each been charged with a dog running at large and a dog attacking a person causing severe injury, said Murray.

They will have mandatory court appearances and could face fines of up to $10,000 per charge.
