Three Boyd teens indicted for horse shootings

KENTUCKY -- Three teenagers have been indicted in connection with the case in which five horses were shot and killed in Boyd County, Ky. All three of the teens are being charged as adults.
According to Commonwealth Attorney, David Justice, Travis Thompson, 18, of Ashland, Ky., Cody A. Hicks, 17, of Ashland, Ky., and Corey S. Shannon, 18, of Catlettsburg, Ky., have been indicted for the shooting of five horses in January in Durbin and Burnaugh areas of Boyd County, near the Lawrence County line.

The shootings occurred in early January. One family awoke the morning of Jan. 2. to find one of its horses dead from an apparent gunshot wound to the chest, while another horse, which had to be put down, had been shot in the stomach.

 The following day, another horse, a few miles away from the first incident, had to be put down after it was shot in its back legs and paralyzed.

“They have all been indicted, the two juveniles are being tried as an adult. The adult is 18 years of age. One of the juveniles just now turned 18. He was 17 at the time of the shooting. The shooting took place on Friday night Jan. 3, 2014. The two 17 year old young men have been certified by the court to be tried as adults, they both were indicted on Monday. They are all in jail now, and will be tried at the appropriate time for a Class D felony,” Justice said.

Justice said a Class D felony carries a penalty of one to five year prison sentence.

Shannon is charged with complicity to commit criminal mischief, a felony, and cruelty to animals, a misdemeanor. The criminal mischief charges carry a five year prison sentence. The animal cruelty charge carries a sentence of up to one year in jail.

Thompson, Hicks, and Shannon are being held in the Boyd County Detention Center.
