Joliet man witnessed 'throwing away' dog, police say

ILLINOIS -- A Joliet man who threw his dog into a garbage can in a fit of anger was arrested Saturday on a charge of animal cruelty, Joliet police said.

Officers were called after a witness saw Michael L. Allen, 36, remove the small animal from its outdoor leash and dispose of it in a trash container on the side of his 206 Comstock Ave. house at about 2:20 p.m., Capt. Robert Briney said.

"He said, 'I'm sick of this dog,' took it off its tie and then threw it in the garbage can," Briney said.

Police recovered the animal and turned it over to Joliet Township Animal Control, he said. It did not appear to be injured.

Allen was charged with a misdemeanor, and released on a recognizance bond pending his next court appearance on June 14, reports said.
