Lisette Tobon, 23, is expected to get 2 years of probation when she is sentenced July 15 on second-degree offering a false instrument, a misdemeanor, the Nassau District Attorney's office said.
She gave a fake phone number and address when she adopted a Pekingese named Willow from the North Hempstead Town animal shelter in Port Washington in November, prosecutors said.
In violation of her adoption agreement, she listed the 8-year-old dog on Craigslist and sold it days after the adoption for $200, investigators said. When shelter officials found out, they were unable to reach her due to the false contact information Tobon gave, court papers said.
She was released on her own recognizance Tuesday after pleading guilty. Tobon, who was represented by Legal Aid, could not be immediately reached.
Authorities said Tobon went back to the same shelter for another dog, saying she wanted a companion for Willow, court papers said.
The town's shelter turned her away after confronting her about the Craigslist sale, so Tobon tried to adopt a dog from the Babylon Town shelter in West Babylon, where she was turned away also, according to the complaint against her.
Tobon was arrested in March and charged with two counts of felony first-degree offering a false instrument for filing and second-degree scheme to defraud, a misdemeanor. She told investigators she had made similar online sales of about 75 to 100 dogs, court papers said.
