Police Forced to Shoot Pit Bull in Yankton

SOUTH DAKOTA -- Police Officers in Yankton, SD had to put down a Pit Bull after it attacked a jogger early Monday morning.

According to Yankton Police Chief Brian Paulsen, officers were called out around 7:40 A.M. to an area on East 8th street in Yankton after the report of a dog attack.

When officers arrived, they learned that two pit bulls were currently roaming free in the area. The dogs were known to residents of the area, and as officers attempted to visit the owner's residence, they were alerted by a man staying in a nearby camper that the dogs were nearby and not allowing him to leave his campsite.

Authorities say one of the dogs then charged the officers. One officer fired two shots, striking the attacking dog both times. The other dog ran away when the shots were fired.

The jogger who was injured suffered bites to both calves and his right thigh. He was treated at a local hospital and later released.

The deceased dog has been sent to a state laboratory in Pierre for rabies testing. The other dog remains with its owner.
