Buck's Back: Abused dog makes miraculous recovery

LOUISIANA -- Two months ago a concerned citizen called the City of Walker Animal Control about a dog who appeared to be forgotten and unloved. The dog was malnourished, weak, and had no hope left in his frail body.

Buck, who is believed to be an 18-month-old Weimaraner mix, was found on April 3, emaciated, dehydrated and he weighed only 21 pounds.

When Mary Gray with the Walker Animal Shelter found Buck, she was afraid she was too late.

"When I walked up to him, I thought he was dead. But thankfully he wasn't. I picked him up and held him," she said.

Buck was found in a secluded backyard, not far from the City of Walker Animal Control.

The veterinarian examined Buck and his body condition, on a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being the worst, was a 2. He was extremely dehydrated and lifeless. He had hook worms and tape worms and even water made him sick.

Buck's owner was charged with animal cruelty. "He pleaded guilty to the charges and had to pay a hefty fine, as well as the vet bill and after care for Buck," said Gray.

The employees of the Walker Animal Shelter instantly fell in love with Buck. He started improving and his zest for life came back.

Within the past two months, Buck has gained 21 pounds and is a happy, healthy and energetic pup! "He loves attention and is happy all of the time. Even if he is just sitting in his crate he is happy!" said Gray.

Buck, with his bright blue eyes, is up for adoption from the Walker Animal Control. He gets along great with his shelter buddies and loves all people.

"We are so proud of Buck's will to survive. He has stolen our hearts and reminds us daily why we can't give up! After his owners failed him, he never wavered his trust and love in humanity," said Gray.

He especially loves visitors and if you're interested in adopting this sweet boy, you are urged to call the Walker Animal Control at 225-791-3482, or visit him at 13740 Ball Park Road in Walker, LA.
