Joseph Kennedy, 27, arrested 'after throwing puppy from moving vehicle in front of eight-month-old son after having fight with girlfriend'

ARIZONA -- An Arizona man accused of throwing a puppy from a vehicle traveling 50mph was arrested on Monday on suspicion of animal cruelty and drug violations.

Joseph Kennedy, 27, told investigators that he was 'distraught' after a fight with his girlfriend about a week earlier and tossed the puppy in front of his eight-month-old son because he 'didn't care for the animal', according to a Yavapai County Sheriff's Office statement.

The puppy has recovered physically but suffered 'significant neurological' damage, Sheriff Scott Mascher told Azcentral.com. It was taken to the Montezuma Veterinary Services in Camp Verde for treatment neurological and blindness issues and was adopted by MaryAnn Canning.

Ms Canning, who named the pooch Hope, said the dog is blind in one eye and deaf but still full of energy.

'She's doing so well - that's the best part of the story as far as I'm concerned,' she said, according to Azfamily.com. 'I was really relieved that Hope is going to get some justice.'

A sheriff's deputy arrested Mr Kennedy after spotting him hiding in the back of a pickup truck outside a convenience store in Cottonwood. He was uncooperative with authorities and refused to disclose the location of his son, who was later found with a babysitter and placed in the custody of Child Protective Services.

He was uncooperative when authorities tried to arrest him, police said. They found three packages of methamphetamine and associated paraphernalia on him at the time of his arrest.

A search of the suspect's property revealed three 'personal use' packages of methamphetamine and associated paraphernalia.

Mr Kennedy, of Cornville, was apprehended after the sheriff's office received tips from the public that identified him.

He was booked into the Camp Verde Detention Center and is being held on a $17,500 bond.
