Girl, 1, attacked by dog in west Flagler

FLORIDA -- A 1-year-old girl was attacked by a dog and sustained lacerations and puncture wounds to her face and head, deputies said Friday.

The Flagler County Sheriff's Office was called shortly after 7:40 p.m. Thursday to an area along County Road 305 in Daytona North and spoke with a woman who told deputies that her daughter had been bitten on the face by a dog, according to reports.

The responding deputy noticed a 1-inch laceration across the right side of the child's nose near her eye and “multiple punctures” to the right side and top of her head and punctures on her right cheek, according to the report.

Another deputy at the scene applied pressure to the girl's wound and stopped the bleeding. She was taken by ambulance to Florida Hospital Flagler to be treated for her injuries, deputies said.

The girl's grandmother described the dog as a dark brown, pit bull mix weighing about 60 pounds.

The witness said she saw the dog wander onto the property at 1134 Lancewood St. and it appeared friendly, according to reports. The girl was petting the dog when it suddenly turned aggressive and attacked her, deputies said.

Both the mother and grandmother grabbed the girl and brought her to a nearby store to use the telephone and call for help, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Deputies searched the area, but couldn't find the dog.

Animal control officers were expected to return Friday to set traps in an attempt to capture the dog, deputies said.
