UNITED KINGDOM -- A YOUNG boy was left with deep cuts to his head after he was "shaken like a teddy bear" during a frightening mauling by a dog.
Jack Sage Foran (3) was left bleeding from the head after the collie attacked him yards from his front door. The little boy had been playing with other children outside his home in the Ballygraigue Court housing estate in Nenagh, Co Tipperary on Saturday evening at about 5.30pm.
Jack's father William Sage said "there was so much blood out there it was like a war zone".
His mother Trisha Foran said: "It happened here on the neighbour's lawn. The dog had come out and he was playing away. I had a fear of dogs so I picked (my daughter) up and brought her in."Jack and (his brother) Reece were following the bigger ones with the dog."
She said the neighbour's dog approached her son as if it was "coming up to say hello".
"The dog was doing what a dog does, panting and all that. The mouth just went . . . he just took off growling. I don't know if the dog felt threatened by the child and he attacked him.
"He went for him by the throat but the child knew straight away it wasn't a kindly gesture and he turned his head down and the dog got him.
"It looked like a teddy bear that the dog had and he was going hell for leather, shaking the hell out of the child. My whole body froze and I could not help the child and it's killing me. I stood there screaming.
"My neighbour opened the door and he had to beat the dog off the child."
The dog had to be hit with a poker to force him to let the child go. The gardai took the dog to the pound but it is understood it has not been put down at this point.
