Couple awaits trial in animal cruelty case

MARYLAND -- A former Greene Street couple is now awaiting trial in what authorities have called possibly “the worst animal cruelty cases ever to occur in Allegany County.”

Robert Lee Detrick, 71, and Carol Jean Detrick, 61, who reportedly reside on East Wilson Road in Oldtown, are both charged with 66 animal cruelty charges issued in a criminal summons that was served to both of them on Wednesday, according to online District Court of Maryland records.

The Detricks are scheduled to stand trial in district court Aug. 4.

The charges were filed by the C3I Unit through a summons that was issued by a district court commissioner June 26.

Early in the investigation, officials reportedly did not know the whereabouts of the couple who resided at 661 Greene St. for 19 years until they moved several weeks ago.

Authorities seized 33 dogs from the vacant residence and immediately provided emergency medical care to the dogs, all of whom were suffering from various health issues after being left unattended in the West Side property.

The dogs, dubbed the Lucky 33 by animal welfare officials, ranged in ages from 2 weeks to 10 years.
Two of the dogs have reportedly had puppies since they were rescued from the Greene Street residence.

The Allegany County Animal Shelter Management Foundation, which has a maintenance agreement with the county to operate the animal shelter, has provided round-the-clock care for the dogs since they were discovered. An outpouring of community support from citizens and business owners followed, including fundraisers and donations to the shelter.

Donations will be accepted at free concerts at Canal Place today at 7 p.m. and July 4 at 4:30 p.m. Information on making contributions is available at www.ashelterofhope.com or by calling 301-777-5930.
