East Texas UPS delivery woman attacked by pit bull

TEXAS -- An East Texas UPS driver is recovering after a dog attacked her while she was delivering packages.

She said a pit bull came at her after breaking loose from its chain last Thursday. She said she has been delivering for UPS for 18 years, and nothing like this has ever happened.

Vickie York is a dog lover. She still is, she said, even after what happened when she was unloading boxes at a home on her route near Troup.

"Was fixing to carry them up there, stepped out of the truck and the dog was at me. He was going for my face and my neck and I threw my arm up," York explained.

She said the owners quickly came out to stop the dog.

"Apologized saying the dog's never done anything like that or all that. Why would they have it in a cage and on a chain, though? He broke out of the cage and was dragging a big old chain behind him," she described.

Her arm was bleeding and swollen. Pictures of her wounds show two gashes and several puncture marks. She said the owner bandaged her up and then, “I went and delivered a few more stops, in fact. I did. I was in shock."

The pain was so bad her boss came and drove her to the hospital. Stitches, an infection, and three doctor visits later, she said she's ready to go back to work.

"I can't use my arm. I'm going in at six probably to answer the phone. I don't know when I'll be able to drive," she said, also saying she would miss driving.

But, wounds on her arm aren't the only scars left.

"The first night I got home I had some pain medicine that was supposed to knock me out, but then I woke up every two hours seeing that dog in my face. It was scary," she remembered.

Officials said the dog was current on its shots and York said despite the events of that day, she still loves dogs.

"They make fun of me at work because I carry dog biscuits in the car. I have no problem with, you know, it's never happened before," she explained and she hopes it won't ever happen again.

Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the dog attack. They said the dog is currently under home quarantine per state regulations, meaning the dog must be kept at home and monitored by officials until the investigation is complete. That could take up to ten days.
