Mum's fear as pet savaged by a snarling dog

UNITED KINGDOM -- A Burnley mum said she fears it is only a matter of time before a child is savaged after her pet was “ragged around like a piece of meat” by a snarling dog.

Leanne Reynolds (21) said her dog Mitzi, a small husky cross, was pulled through a wooden garden fence and was left covered in blood following the attack by the animal, believed to be a Staffordshire bull terrier / pit bull terrier cross.

Leanne had been to check on her friend Jessica Owens’ house in Holcombe Drive last Saturday while she was away for the weekend.

She let Mitzi out into the garden but just minutes later her pet was savaged by the dog, which was being walked along the back street by a 14-year-old boy.

“My dog put its nose through the fence and the other dog locked its jaw around her face. A 14-year-old boy had the dog on a lead but he couldn’t control it.

“It ragged Mitzi round like a piece of meat,” said Leanne, who lives in Morse Street.

She said her one-year-old daughter Kiera likes to play in the garden and said she could have fallen victim to the dog.

“She wouldn’t have stood a chance. There are lots of children who play round there. There is a park and St Mary’s Primary School is only round the corner.

“It’s only a matter of time before a child is hurt. The dog was out of control.”

After several minutes the dog released its grip on Mitzi but she was left howling and covered in blood. Leanne took her to the vets where she was given antibiotics to guard against infection but said she has refused to go outside since the attack and is visibly nervous.

Leanne’s friend Jessica, who lives in the house, added she had refused to let her son Jayden (5) play outside since the incident and fears him being attacked.

“It’s really frightened me because my son always wants to play out and this week I haven’t let him.”

Leanne said she reported the attack to police but was told it was not a police matter.

A spokeswoman for Lancashire Police said: “We don’t generally deal with dog on dog attacks.”

Leanne has also notified the dog warden about the incident.
