Owner gets probation in dog attack case

ILLINOIS -- A Bloomington woman was sentenced to 30 months probation and ordered to pay $88,000 restitution for medical bills Friday in connection with an attack by her pit bull that severely injured another person.

Shalayne Doss was convicted of reckless conduct in June for injuries suffered by a woman attacked by Doss' 3-year-old dog. The woman, who was delivering phone books with her husband, was severely injured when the dog pushed through a door and attacked her outside Doss' residence.

McLean County Associate Judge Casey Costigan told Doss she should have known her dog was potentially dangerous based on its violent history.

"You should have had the insight to see the dog was beyond your ability to control," said Costigan.

Doss admitted Friday that "what my dog did was wrong, deeply wrong."

She also was ordered to complete 100 hours community service. A 60-day jail term was stayed pending a remission hearing.

The judge also barred Doss from owning animals. The dog involved in the attack was euthanized.

Assistant State's Attorney Samantha Walley asked for 180 days in jail and probation. The victim's serious injuries "will plague her for the rest of her life," Walley said.

Defense lawyer David Rumley cited Doss' health issues in asking for probation.
