OHIO -- The pit bull that attacked and bit a young Clermont County girl last month, seriously injuring her, was euthanized Monday.
The family that owned the animal signed it over to the Clermont County Humane Society to be put down, said Bonnie Morrison, shelter director.
"It was a hard decision," she said Tuesday.
Had the family kept the dog, they would have had several limitations, such as making sure it was leashed or tethered at all times and licensed as a dangerous dog, animal official said.
The 8-year-old girl, Raelynn Liming, was flown to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center July 20 after the dog bit her in the face at Greenbriar Mobile Home park in the 200 block of Seton Court in Batavia.
Liming was sitting on the floor watching TV about 9:50 p.m. when the homeowner's pit bull-boxer mix approached her and attacked her in the face without any warning, Clermont County sheriff's officials have said.
The bite caused an open wound that required more than 200 stitches, and the owners restrained the canine.
Clermont County Animal Control was notified of the incident. The dog was placed under a 10-day quarantine order.
The dog's owner, 36-year-old Dennis Grant, faces a vicious dog charge in Clermont County Municipal Court.
PIT BULL RECENTLY KILLED SIX YEAR OLD GIRL
Pit bulls have come under intense debate locally after two savagely mauled a six-year-old Westwood girl in June.
And on Monday, a 59-year-old Butler County woman was killed when her family's pit bull attacked her.
Cindy Whisman suffered multiple injuries to her face, neck and body, according to the Butler County Sheriff's Office. She was pronounced dead at the scene in the 4700 block of Eck Road in Madison Township.
The dog was taken to Animal Friends Humane Society in Hamilton.
