Deputies: Woman leaves dog in hot car to sit on beach

FLORIDA -- A woman is facing an animal cruelty charge after witnesses saw her lock her dog in a hot car while she went to the beach.

Deputies arrested the woman, Rosa Greco of Orlando, after she left the small dog inside a hot car with the windows up around 1:30 p.m. Monday along Harrison Avenue in Cape Canaveral.

Vincent Inherst spotted the dog in time.

"I witnessed the lady locking the dog in her SUV, with all the windows up, the air condition wasn't running," said Inherst. "I also witnessed her walk back to the beach and sit down under a nice umbrella, eating a sandwich and drinking a soda."

Inherst called 911 when he saw her leave her dog and set up for a full afternoon at the beach.

Seconds after deputies set it free, the small dog was given a drink of water (the video shows the dog gulping water). Witnesses said the dog was in the hot car for about 10 minutes.

"I'm sorry," Greco told the deputy as she was being arrested and taken to jail.

Witnesses said they think it's a case of a woman who did not realize the danger.

"It's just crazy because you've been seeing on the news kids dying, dogs dying in these hot cars and that stuff and these people need to get the message that it's unacceptable," said Inherst. "That dog could have died in maybe 10 or 15 minutes in that car."

Deputies said Animal Control took temporary possession of the dog.
