Jawless horse put down amid animal abuse investigation

TEXAS -- Jesus Rodriguez said his horse’s injuries looked like a scene out of a horror movie.

“By 5 in the morning, I found him by the ranch next door and he didn't have his teeth or a portion of his jaw,” he said.  “He also had a slit on his throat."

He showed Action 4’s Ryan Wolf where he left his 4-year-old horse tied up around a tree on Thursday night.

Injury blurred out

It was at an abandoned property along North Trosper Road at Alejandra Street near Palmhurst.

He said he often left the horse there to feed on the overgrown lot.

Blood stains now covered the grass in the area.

His horse named Rayo, which is Spanish for lightning, suffered a severe injury early Friday morning.

Photos showed the horse with a portion of his jaw split wide open and a gaping hole where the teeth should be.

Jesus said he had to have Rayo put down by a veterinarian just hours after he found him.

"The horse was very lovable,” the 70-year-old said with tears in his eyes.  “He would always follow me around and everything."

His family contacted law enforcement shortly after they made the gruesome discovery.

They feared their horse had been viciously abused and cut loose from the tree.

Alton police, state troopers and Mission police worked on the case.

Jose Zuniga was arrested in Mission along West 24th Street following an anonymous tip.

Police believed he was involved in a possible auto-pedestrian accident that took place outside their jurisdiction along West 2 Mile Line and North Trosper Road.

The investigation later revealed the alleged hit and run involved a horse. Zuniga was subsequently only charged for allegedly providing a false name to police.

Rodriguez still doesn't know how Rayo got loose.

“I don't know what really happened," he said.

He feels like family member is now gone.

Troopers continues to investigate the case.
