NORTH CAROLINA -- A 20-year-old horse was seized and put to sleep after it was reportedly neglected and abused.
The horse’s owner, Paul Lynn Henderson, has been charged with misdemeanor cruelty to animals, according to a warrant served by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators and a rescue group got involved after a person spotted an injured horse, according to Lincoln County Animal Shelter manager David Workman.
“Someone called the rescue group and said that the horse went down and couldn’t get up,” Workman said.
The hope was to save the animal, according to Joanie Benson, executive director of Horse Protection Society out of China Grove.
The horse was malnourished with an infected hoof, said Benson. A veterinarian recommended euthanizing the animal, Benson said.
“You have no choice. You’re not going to get that better. You’re not going to save that hoof because the infection was in the bone,” she said. “To keep a horse like that alive is just disgusting. You can’t allow them to suffer like that.”
