Pit bull shot after attacking service dog

WASHINGTON -- Spokane Police said a man shot a pit bull Saturday morning after the pit bull attacked his service dog.

SCRAPS and Spokane Police officers responded to the scene and said the pit bull was unsecured when it charged the man's dog.

It happened near the area of 1100 West 5th. The service dogs owner says he and his 10 year-old German Shepard Toby were walking to the store when the pit bull attacked.

The owner said he fired a shot at the dog and hit him in the side. He said he tried to kick the dog but he kept trying to bite his service dog.

Officials said the service dog is okay. The pit bull was rushed to emergency care, and its condition remains unknown.

Toby has been the man's service dog for 8 years. He said his dog's vest saved him from serious wounds but is still shaken up.

The man who fired at the dog will likely not face any charges according to officials because the pit bull attacked his dog. This case remains under investigation.
