Waynesboro cat owner found guilty of animal cruelty

PENNSYLVANIA -- A Waynesboro woman was found guilty Wednesday on 42 counts of animal cruelty for having as many as 46 cats on her property and feline carcasses in a basement freezer.

Dorothy L. Sherry, the owner of the 471 W. Fourth St. property, was prohibited by Magisterial District Judge Larry Pentz from owning cats for five years and limited her to a maximum of two cats for five years after that.

In addition, Sherry was fined for one count of animal cruelty. Sherry will have 30 days to appeal the court’s decision.

A court order was signed on July 29 barring anyone from living at the property until the code violations were satisfied. At that time, the judge also ordered that the cats be retrieved by the Antietam Humane Society.

Many of the cats were euthanized after being diagnosed with health issues including feline leukemia. The humane society continues to set traps for any cats remaining on the property.

The court also ordered that the borough be responsible for all costs related to the cats.

According to assistant Waynesboro Borough Manager Jason Stains, the borough fees for the property has reached between $4,000 and 5000.

“We are currently seeking relief for paying any more fees associated with the cats,” Stains said.

Inspection still hasn’t passed for a second property owned by Sherry at 471 1/2 W. Fourth St., as repairs are still being made and could possible allow Sherry into the secondary house.
