IOWA -- A Waterloo woman was taken to the hospital after she was bit by a pit bull that was attacking her dog Tuesday evening.
According to police, 27-year-old Kate Shadlow was walking her dog in the 300 block of West Fourth Street at about 6:50 p.m. when a pit bull jumped out of the driver’s-side window of a parked vehicle and went after her dog.
A passerby attempted to break up the fight with his cane, and Shadlow received injuries to her arm and hand when she tried to separate the dogs, said Lt. Michael McNamee with the Waterloo Police Department.
Paramedics with Waterloo Fire Rescue took Shadlow to Allen Hospital for treatment, McNamee said. Her dog survived the attack and was taken to an area veterinarian by her husband, according to Sandie Greco, who oversees at the city’s Animal Control division.
The owner of the pit bull is Jake Petersen, 23, of Waterloo, police said.
Greco said a citation was issued for fear of attack, and the investigation is continuing.
“This takes about a week or so, because we investigate thoroughly what happened,” Greco said.
She said it is likely the dog will be deemed potentially dangerous, which will require special registration, microchipping and increased insurance coverage.
She said the dog was returned to the owner and remains quarantined at home.
