CALIFORNIA -- An abused dog was brought into the Bakersfield Animal Care Center on Tuesday with a hook, about 4 inches long and 2 inches wide, pierced through its back left Achilles tendon, officials said.
The dog, estimated to be 3 to 4 years old, was brought in around 10:40 a.m. after it was found running through central Bakersfield, said Julie Johnson, executive director of the animal care center.
The hook, a spring clasp, is estimated to have been stuck in the dog's leg for about five to seven days as a method of keeping it tied up.
The dog, a black labrador mixed breed, also had severe lacerations to the inside of its right front leg and the outside of its left leg, Johnson said.
The dog was sedated and underwent surgery to remove the hook and clean the wounds. It has been placed on antibiotic drugs to stop infection.
Johnson said police do not know who the owner is, but Marley's Mutts Dog Rescue is offering a $1,000 reward to anyone who can help police with the arrest and prosecution of the animal's abuser.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the Bakersfield Animal Care Center at 832-7387.
