NEW YORK -- A Southside woman was arrested on a bench warrant Wednesday evening after an investigation into the status of her severely injured puppy, Elmira Animal Control said Thursday.
Syvella Crosby, 40, of Elmira, also was charged with animal cruelty and several other violations, animal control said.
Animal control officers were called shortly after 7:30 p.m. Monday to 427 Broadway for a motor vehicle accident involving a dog. After quickly locating the dog and its owner, it was determined that the 5-month-old female pit bull mix was in pain, suffering from a broken femur of the left rear leg, in addition to contusions on the head, animal control said.
Before leaving the scene, officers advised Crosby that the dog needed emergency veterinarian care and provided a list of on-call veterinarians.
Animal control said it returned Wednesday to check on the puppy. Crosby refused to produce the dog to the officers, and after further investigation, it was determined that Crosby failed to provide veterinarian care for the severely injured puppy.
Further investigation also revealed that Crosby was wanted on a bench warrant out of Elmira City Court, animal control said. The bench warrant was for fourth-degree criminal mischief.
As a result, Crosby was arrested on the warrant and charged with one count of cruelty to animals, a misdemeanor that carries maximum penalties of a $1,000 fine, up to one year in jail or both. She was also charged with one count each of: failure to provide rabies vaccination, failure to license a dog, and having an unrestrained dog.
Animal control said it seized the puppy and transported it for emergency treatment to the Home Veterinarian Clinic, where the dog remains.
