Teens charged with animal cruelty after reportedly letting family dog maul a kitten

GEORGIA -- Athens-Clarke County Police charged two teens with Cruelty to Animals after witnesses said they cheered on their dog to kill a kitten.

Jahmal Swaby and Trevaughn Thomas were arrested on Oct. 3. and their neighbor called 911 to report the attack.

Wanda Wright said she watched Swaby and Thomas cheer and egg on the family dog to kill a kitten. For 10 minutes Wright said she begged for the teens to stop the attack. But, that never happened.

By the time Athens-Clarke County police arrived the cat was dead and the teenagers Wright said live across the street were gone.

"They were telling the dog to get the kitten and I told them to get the kitten out of the fence and they wouldn't do it," Wright said. "The cat was screaming. The cat was acting real crazy. He was running around trying to get out and the dog was really loud barking. I think it is evil, it is real evil."

Wright said her son Solomon and her sister Karen Freeman also witnessed the attack and pleaded for the teens to save the cat.

CBS46 News went to the home at 350 Conrad Dr. to talk to the teenagers involved. When we asked who put the cat in the cage the teen identified to us by Wright walked in the house and shut the door.

A police officer was at the home when we arrived and told us the family refused to cooperate with their investigation. Wright said she will do whatever it takes to have the teenagers involved charged.

"That is cruelty to animals, you don't do that," Wright said. "There is something wrong with their heads, they need help. What else will they try to do? I don't like coming out my door and seeing people do evil things to animals."

During the attack Freeman said Swaby and Thomas could have saved the kitten.

"They could have got the cat out, the cat was still living. They were cheering, 'get it, get it, get it, get that cat,'" Freeman said.
