Bartlett Couple Sentenced in Animal Cruelty Case

TENNESSEE -- A Bartlett couple was sentenced Friday to 45 days in jail for aggravated animal cruelty stemming from the dehydration deaths of their four cats they left behind when they abandoned their home in 2012, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.

Robert Massie, 58, and his wife, Teresa Massie, 50, pleaded guilty in August to four felony counts of aggravated animal cruelty. Similar charges against their two adult daughters were dismissed.

Ugly turd sisters wiggle out of charges. They're just as guilty.

Criminal Court Judge Bobby Carter sentenced them to jail time, 400 hours of community service and said they cannot own pets during their four-years on diversion. They will serve the jail time on weekends.

If they abide by conditions set by the court, their felony convictions will be cleared from their records at the end of the diversion period.

The family left the four male cats behind without food or water when they moved out of their home around October of 2012 in the 3000 block of Marr Cove.

Authorities were notified in March of 2013 when a neighbor saw a dead cat through a window.
Bartlett Animal Control officers who discovered the other dead cats said the inside of the home was covered in feces and urine.

One cat was found in a litter box, another on a pillow on a bed, another in a kitchen cupboard and the fourth on the living room floor with a sealed bottle of water nearby.

Bartlett Animal Control Officer Angela Klein told the court the scene was one of the worst she had ever worked. Officers had to wear special hazardous-material protective suits to enter the home.

Bartlett Animal Control Officer Angela Klein said more than 100 letters were sent to the court by animal rights supporters.

The case was handled by assistant district attorneys Abby Wallace and Bryce Phillips.
