VERMONT -- The Burlington City Council upheld an ordinance that bans pit bulls after hearing feedback from members of the community Monday tonight.
At Monday night's city council meeting, members of the community spoke out on whether or not they believed people should have the right to have a pit bull on their property.
People on both sides of the issue referenced studies or statistics they had read on whether or not ownership of pit bulls posed a danger to the community.
“Out of all the people that have been killed by dogs, 70 percent of them were killed by pit bulls,” said Burlington resident Tim Hoff, referencing a study.
“I think a lot of this is fueled by emotion,” said Jaime Nett-Johnson, a Minot resident and veterinarian. “A lot of people are giving anecdotal reasons why they think it's a good idea, or they think it's not a good idea. I think a lot of it is fear based,” she added.
