Charges dropped in dog shooting

OHIO -- Felony weapons charges were dropped Tuesday against a Toledo man charged with shooting a German shepherd in East Toledo on the day he was to go to trial.

Marcus Crawford, 26, of 3324 Blackstone Drive still is charged with cruelty to animals and other misdemeanors in Toledo Municipal Court for allegedly shooting the dog in the 900 block of Clark Street March 24. He has a hearing on those charges Thursday in municipal court.

In Lucas County Common Pleas Court, Brad Smith, an assistant county prosecutor, asked Judge Gene Zmuda to dismiss felony charges of carrying a concealed weapon and having weapons under disability, saying that witnesses needed to testify at Crawford’s trial had failed to appear for court. Mr. Smith reserved the right to refile the charges at a later date.

Crawford had filed a notice of alibi in the case, contending he was in Columbus staying with his sister at the time of the incident.

His cousin, Gary Crawford, 35, of 840 Utah St. entered an Alford plea, not admitting guilt, on June 11 to a misdemeanor charge of obstructing justice in the case.
