Charlotte the puppy remains under close observation of the ASPCA

NEW YORK -- Charlotte the puppy, who was allegedly abused by her owner, Alsu Ivanchenko, remains under the close watch of the ASPCA Thursday.

"At this time Charlotte continues to be under close observation of veterinarians at the ASPCA Animal Hospital where she is receiving care," the ASPCA said in a statement to the Advance. "There are no further updates to her condition to provide at this time.  We appreciate the outpouring of concern for her, but this remains an active case with the Staten Island District Attorney, and we cannot say more at this time."

The 3-month-old Maltese-Shih Tzu mix has a fractured skull, a fractured femur and brain trauma resulting from blunt force impact because of her ordeal, doctors have determined.

According to allegations in court documents, Ms. Ivanchenko told cops she couldn't afford medical treatment for the dog, whom she named Snowflake, so she dumped her into a garbage bag and threw the injured animal from her car onto the side of the road in Bay Terrace on Sept. 12.

She is scheduled to return to court Nov. 5.

The dog was re-named Charlotte by the animal activists who initially cared for her after she was discovered.
