Sheriff Patricia Ninmann said deputies were called to a Town of Hustisford home around 5:20 p.m. for a report of a dog that had severely bitten a 7-year-old boy.
The boy, Logan T. Meyer, was pronounced dead at the scene.
"Various agencies were involved in this and did a phenomenal job," said Lt. Brian Loos with the Dodge County Sheriff's Office. "They were at the scene attempting to save this child's life for quite a long period of time."
Ninmann said the dog, a rottweiler named Ozzy, was owned by the family.
Loos said Friday that the dog was being transported to an area humane society to be put in quarantine.
Pastor Timothy Bauer has been the chaplain for the Dodge County sheriff's Office for many years. He's responded to hundreds of terrible incidents.
"I don't think I'll ever forget this. This has got to be at the top of the list as far as how horrible it was," Bauer said.
When the chaplain was called to the house Friday, Logan was still alive but died soon after.
Bauer said after talking with the boy's parents for a long time he's learned the dog has been with the family for awhile and has a background in both military and police training.
"I do know he was trained to be a service dog. He was not trained to be an attack dog or any of that stuff," Bauer said.
Logan and his parents just moved to Wisconsin last week.
"The mother was absolutely not at fault. These people are wonderful, wonderful people," Bauer said. "They're doing as well as can be expected under those circumstances--the mother is having a difficult time everybody is giving her support."
