Couple Found Guilty of Animal Cruelty

VIRGINIA --  A judge found a Waynesboro coupe guilty Monday of animal cruelty.

Christi Marie Dewhirst, 27, and Christopher Dewhrist, 30, were sentenced to a 30-day suspended jail sentence.

Police arrested the couple in September.

Police say the couple abandoned a 14-week-old "ill-treated" puppy near their home at Brandon Ladd Apartments.

Police found Daisha, a pit-bull mix, near the complex's maintenance office.

Daisha was found with a collar embedded into her neck, causing a wound that was infected.

Police say they questioned Christi Dewhirst, who told them she let the animal go the day before because the puppy kept going to the bathroom in the apartment.

Daisha is now at the Shenandoah Valley Animal Services Center recovering.
