Waynesboro couple charged with animal cruelty

VIRGINIA -- A Waynesboro couple has been arrested and charged by city police on animal cruelty charges.

The couple is suspected of abandoning their 14-week-old puppy near their apartment complex in August.

Charged with one count of animal cruelty are Christi Marie Dewhirst, 27, and Christopher Michael Dewhirst, 30. Christi Dewhirst has an additional charge of animal abandonment.


The city's animal control offier responded to the Brandon Ladd Apartments on Aug. 25 for a report of a stray puppy. The dog, a female pit bull mix, was found with its collar embedded into its neck. The dog a partially infected wound in its neck from the imbedded collar. The ownership of the dog was tracked to the Dewhirsts.

An examination of the dog at Woodworth Animal Hospital revealed that the dog had likely been in the collar since she was six to eight weeks old. Christi Dewhirst said she had let the dog go because it had continually left feces and urine in the couple's apartment.



The two were arrested Thursday night. Both were being held in Middle River Regional Jail.
Christopher Dewhirst was being held on a $1,500 bond, and Christi Dewhirst on a $1,000 bond.
