Lifesaving cat severely mauled and left to die on doorstep

UNITED KINGDOM -- A cat owner has appealed for answers after her pet was severely mauled and dumped on her doorstep to die.

Carer Francine Carragher arrived to her Scotswood home on Friday night to find 14-year-old Sooty dying outside her home.

“I’m really upset and just want to get to the bottom of it as people shouldn’t be allowed to keep dangerous animals that would do this,” said the former teacher. “He was a beautiful, gentle cat and would never harm a thing.

“We’d had Sooty from birth as his mum Gizmo had a litter of six kittens and we kept him and his sister - who was later run over by a driver who didn’t stop - and he’d moved 19 times with us since 2001 as I had a lot of jobs in different places.

“He saved our lives when we lived on the Quayside as when there was a gas leak he came and woke me up by gently pawing at my face.

“I feel cold every time I walk up the steps to the front door where I found him, my dog Jerry is missing him and my little cat Princess Jasmine won’t eat. She keeps looking for him. And I’m now scared to let Jazz out.”

I don't think her cat was 'dumped' on her doorstep by a person. I think the cat was attacked and crawled back home where it was found or else it was attacked right there on the front steps and that's where she found him.

Sooty was rushed to a PDSA vets, but his injuries - including a broken back, missing teeth and claws, and damage to his internal organs - were too severe to save him.

“The vet said if there is any consolation he put up a fight and the ‘large dog’ that attacked him would have not come out of it unscathed.

“But someone out there must know exactly what happened - even if someone had rung the doorbell after putting him there and run off, then my daughter was in and maybe something could have been done for him.

“He didn’t deserve to die like that - yes he was 14, but he had years to go and deserved to reach old age. He was such a charming cat.”

Francine said she now hopes someone will come forward and provide details of the attack, or the dog that carried it out, before something more serious happens.

“What if this had been a small child?” she said. “If it is capable of causing this level of suffering to another animal then it is dangerous.”

A spokesman for Northumbria Police confirmed the attack had been reported to them at 1.25am on Saturday morning and that officers were carrying out inquiries, but the dog responsible has not yet been found.

Anyone with information should call 101, extension 69191, quoting incident log 123 of October 11.
