CALIFORNIA -- A 7-year-old Perris girl was attacked by a stray pit bull that the child's mother brought into their home for safekeeping, authorities said today.
The child, whose identity was not released, suffered bites and lacerations to her face but is expected to recover from the attack, which occurred around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to Riverside County Department of Animal Services spokesman John Welsh.
The girl's mother apparently spotted the 2-year-old female canine wandering around Spring Street, in an unincorporated area south of Perris, and picked it up.
"When a kind person takes a dog off the street and brings it home, he or she should bear in mind that the dog is not in familiar surroundings," said animal control Officer Rita Gutierrez. "The dog may show signs of fear, and these types of dogs should not be around small children."
It's unclear what prompted the dog to attack the child. Sheriff's deputies were called to the house initially, but summoned help from the Department of Animal Services, Welsh said.
He said the dog was impounded and will remain quarantined for 10 days. There was no word on whether its owner had been located.
Department of Animal Services officials said it's advisable to place any stray dog in a garage or other secure location and request that an animal control officer retrieve it.
