Police: Dog's Stabbing May Have Been 'Self-Defense' & Not Animal Cruelty

CALIFORNIA -- A dog is recovering after being hit on the head with a shovel, then slashed and stabbed, causing him to require surgery.

Police said Spartacus, a pit bull mix, was hit at about 4 a.m. Saturday near 10th and Florence avenues in South Los Angeles. He later underwent two hours of surgery and received 1,000 stitches as a result of his injuries.

Initial reports indicated the dog may have been the victim of an angry neighbor. However, police said Monday the investigation was revealing the case to be likely more "self-defense" and not "animal cruelty."

“We understand that animals who are pictured with severe wounds can be very compelling and it is easy to make assumptions about their injuries,” said Lt. Andy Neiman of the Los Angeles Police Department in a statement. ” However, in this particular case, our animal cruelty experts believe that the investigation is revealing this is a case of self-defense by a person faced with a dog who was at-large and in attack mode.”

Authorities said Spartacus was recovering in a temporary home after receiving 1,000 stitches.

"I have 21 years with the police department and I've never seen a dog that cut up by somebody,'' police Sgt. Tami Baumman told news media outlets immediately following the incident. "We once in a while have seen somebody get mad and they'll choke a dog or cut it, but this dog is cut up all over, this is horrible.''

"He is very, very lucky,'' Dr. Laura Kosmo of the Pet Care Center on Slauson Avenue told the news media. "Fortunately he has very thick skin, so I think his thick skin really stopped that blade from getting any deeper.''

The Los Angeles Police Department Animal Cruelty Unit was investigating the incident. Neiman cautioned media outlets to report based on the facts of the case, "rather than the emotions that may be present" with injured animals.

"The LAPD takes the issue of animal cruelty very seriously," Neiman said. "This message should not be misconstrued as anything other than, the initial reports of this case being an animal cruelty issue are not proving to be accurate based upon the investigators findings at this point."

  4. Such bravery here wow!!! If the cops catch u with a knife u will be going to jail. Why don't you go to the owner of the innocent defenseless dog and be a real man and have him keep his dog in his house and confront him instead? That's what a real man or woman would do instead of blaming a dog that doesnt know any better??
