OREGON -- A woman who was injured by a dog while walking in a Damascus neighborhood is suing the animal's owners for $630,000.
Karen Southard was walking near the home of Mary and Zaki Kahl on Oct. 3, 2012 when, she alleges, the Kahl's dog, Chino, "charged across the street and struck (Southard) in her left knee," according to a recently filed Clackamas County lawsuit.
Southard alleges the Kahls were negligent and "knew or should have known that their dog was dangerous and posed a threat" to passersby; failed to keep the dog under control; and failed to post adequate warning signs to alert the public "of the dangers of the dog,"
The lawsuit details injuries to Southard's left knee. She claims she sustained permanent loss of function, now suffers from arthritis and needed reconstructive surgery.
Southard is seeking $70,000 for medical expenses, $50,000 for future medical costs and $500,000 in non-economic damages.
The Southard case is similar to another Clackamas County lawsuit filed this summer by Jennifer Eckel.
Eckel was walking in Wilsonville's Sophia Park when, she alleges, a dog bit her hand. She is suing the dog's owners, who live next to the park, for $125,000. Eckel claims the dog's owners were negligent for allowing a dangerous animal to run at-large.
