Boy attacked by pit bull in Lake Worth

FLORIDA -- A boy was attacked by a pit bull in Lake Worth Monday, according to Palm Beach County Animal Care & Control..

The attack happened at about 2:30 p.m. in the 7000 block of Wauconda Way in the Brentwood Lakes subdivision.

Animal Care & Control Capt. David Walesky said the dog, Chance, a 7-month-old, 40-pound pit bull, escaped from a cage in the backyard of a home and then jumped over a 6-foot fence.

The dog was in the front yard of the home when two boys, one on a bike, went by and were attacked.

Walesky said one of the boys was bitten on his neck and taken to Delray Medical Center with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries.

The dog's owner, whose name was not released, will face several civil citations for the dog not having a tag, not being sterilized by 6 months old, for allowing the dog to run loose and for keeping the dog in a small crate.

County ordnance requires all dogs kept outside in a fenced yard or something similar to have at least 80 square feet of open space, Walesky said.

The dog's owner will face several hundred dollars in fines, Walesky said, adding that the dog will be held in quarantine for 10 days and most likely wouldn't be released.
