UTAH -- St. George Police and animal control are still investigating a pit bull attack on a chihuahua Halloween afternoon, Sgt. Sam Despain, St. George Police Department public information officer, said Monday.
At about 4 p.m. Friday, Eleanor Davis was walking her dog during a visit with a friend at 1150 W. 360 North, said Beverly Phillips, Davis’ sister.
“My sister had her chihuahua on a leash and was taking her outside for a potty break when this pit bull came out of nowhere and attacked her dog, Nu-Chi,” Phillips said.
Davis said she was just walking when suddenly the pit bull scooped up her dog.
“I was speechless, I didn’t know what to do,” she said.
Davis said if she would have had a bat or another weapon, she would have used it to get the dog to let go of Nu-Chi, but with nothing like that all she could do is stand there until someone came to help.
One witness did help, she said.
“I’m thankful for him,” Davis said.
Nu-Chi was taken to an area veterinarian and then transferred later to Southwest Animal Emergency Hospital, Phillips said.
Nu-Chi died of her injuries at about 3 a.m. Saturday.
“I expected her home Sunday,” Davis said. “She was my whole life.”
Davis said she misses Nu-Chi, and it’s hard to come home from work without her dog excitedly greeting her. Working the day Nu-Chi died was difficult, too, she said.
On top of her loss, she now has medical costs that she can’t afford, she said.
“I’ve never had anything like this happen in my whole life,” Davis said.
One question keeps coming to mind through. “If it attacked my dog, how many others will be attacked? And how long until it’s a child?” she asked.
SGPD hadn’t been aware of Nu-Chi’s death, but the investigation is underway, Despain said.
“It’s sad the dog passed away; that’s terrible,” he said.
St. George Animal Control is continuing to investigate and as of yet no charges have been filed, Despain said.
