Long Beach man pleads not guilty in killing of friend’s beagle dog

CALIFORNIA -- A 27-year-old man pleaded not guilty Friday to kicking a friend’s beagle down stairs killing the pet, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Rubin Powell III was arrested Aug. 11 after someone reportedly saw him kick the dog, Sage, down a flight of stairs at an apartment complex, according to a release.

Sage died as a result of its injuries. It’s not clear why Powell allegedly kicked his friend’s dog.

Powell is scheduled to return to Long Beach Superior Court on Dec. 2.

If convicted as charged, Powell faces a maximum sentence of three years in county jail.

The case is being investigated by Long Beach Animal Care Services.
