Deputies: Girl, dog injured in dog attack in Orange County

FLORIDA -- A child and her dog are injured after being attacked by a dog in Orange County, according to Orange County Sheriff’s Office deputies.

The Sheriff's Office said the 13-year-old girl was walking her dog when her neighbor’s pit bull attacked the dog on Lake Floy Circle Friday morning. The girl was injured when she tried to [stop the attack], deputies said.

While the Sheriff's Office called the dog a pit bull, animals experts told WESH 2 the dog was a "bully breed."

"She was screaming, asking for help. She was very bloody," said a neighbor who tried to pry the pit bull off the girl and wound up being bitten.

The girl was taken to Dr. Phillips Hospital with minor injuries to her hand, deputies said. The girl’s dog was taken to a veterinarian’s office with serious injuries.

Neighbors told WESH 2's Matt Grant they have seen the dog walking in the neighborhood before without a leash.

Orange County Animal Services detained the dog, which will be quarantined for 10 days while officials conduct a dangerous dog investigation.

Deputies said the dog's owner was not cooperative and could be charged with obstructing the investigation for not being truthful. The owner also faces more than $1,200 in fines for not having his dog on a leash and failing to control the animal.
