Shovel used to fight off dog attacking child

FLORIDA -- A four-year old-child is recovering after a vicious attack by a dog.

"Somebody yelled I got the dog," said a neighbor who only wanted to be identified as James.

He called 9-1-1 after hearing the family of the child scream during the attack.

"I just figured I'd better call the police. I didn't know if somebody was getting beat up… you know if they got bit by a dog," he told 10 News.

A Rottweiler mix had clamped down on the child's neck at a home located at 9136 Suffolk Ln in Port Richey around 4:08 pm Sunday afternoon.

According to information from the Pasco Co. Sheriff's Office, "The owner and grandmother of the boy used a shovel to strike the dog multiple times until the dog eventually let go of the boy."

After the dog released its grip on the child, he was airlifted to St. Joseph's hospital in serious condition.

Pasco County Animal Control took the Rottweiler into custody, but it is not clear whether he will be put down for attacking the child.
