OKLAHOMA -- Authorities are searching for the person responsible for burning a dog and leaving it for dead.
Law enforcement officers in Spencer say it is one of the worst cases of animal abuse they have ever seen.
Officials say 40 percent of the dog’s body is burned.
“About two-thirds of the back area was devoid of any fur. It was down to the skin, it was and it was black, red,” said Mike Weiss, Spencer Animal Control officer.
Weiss was called to a home in Spencer after a woman found the poodle laying on her porch.
“The dog had been groomed, so it was, obviously, someone’s dog, somebody’s pet,” he said.
Investigators are searching for clues that will lead them to a suspect.
“It’s someone, I would say, has a sadistic nature. We see this a lot early on with childhood predators,” said Allen Lane, with the Spencer Police Department.
The dog was taken to the Midwest City Animal Shelter and was then transferred to a veterinarian.
“They sent us some initial photos, kind of showing the wounds on his skin, but when he got here, it was quite a bit more severe,” said Kim Hahgan, the veterinarian.
Feeble, quivering and barely able to stand, Hahgan is doing everything she can to help this little guy survive.
“I honestly have not seen a lot of cases this severe,” she said.
The dog’s fur may not grow back, but Hahgan believes the dog will recover after a lot of care.
They have named him affectionately “Little Spencer.”
“The first thing that went through my mind is how could someone do this, and did the owner know where the dog, or was the owner responsible for this?” Weiss said.
Officers believe “Little Spencer” is between two and 4-years-old.
If you know anything about the crime, call Spencer police.
