KANSAS -- An extremely matted dog is undergoing extensive medical care after he was found wandering a Merriam park.
A passer-by rescued the dog Wednesday and took him to the Great Plains SPCA in Merriam. The staff there named him Mistletoe.
The shelter staff said Mistletoe was so matted that he was unable to move or see or eat. His toe nails were at least two inches long. The dog was found at Chatlain Park.
He will need extensive treatment in the coming weeks. He will also be groomed.
"We are asking for the community's help to help Mistletoe. Because we are in a matching gift challenge this month, all donations will be doubled to go twice as far," the shelter said in a release.
Mistletoe will eventually be put up for adoption once he's spiffed up and on the road to recovery.
"He is very sweet," said Sydney Baker, admissions supervisor for the Merriam shelter. "He is not scared of anybody. He loves scratches and loves to be petted."
