Donors give $21,000 to Phoenix boy attacked by Mickey

ARIZONA -- Concerned donors have taken to the Internet to give more than $21,000 to help cover medical expenses of the boy mauled this summer by Mickey, a pit bull mix.

The contributions included an anonymous $13,000 donation that was made Tuesday. The fundraising effort exceeded its goal of $20,000 in just over 10 days, and there is still a month remaining when donors can contribute to the site.

Kevin Vicente was attacked Feb. 20 while he was playing with other children in a yard where his baby-sitter had taken him, according to a court report on the attack. Kevin walked within the 18-foot radius of the dog's chain and the animal caught Kevin from behind, pulling him to the ground and attacking his face, according to the report.

Adults who were present pulled the dog off the boy.

The dog's fate spurred an online debate and a New York-based non-profit raised money to pay for the dog's legal expenses, with a local attorney donating his time to represent Mickey. Tens of thousands of people rallied on social media to save the dog's life.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio ultimately took custody of the dog and housed the animal in his no-kill shelter.

Arpaio later unveiled a webcam where the dog's fans can watch the animal around the clock.

Kevin's mother had to quit her job to care for her son and needs help to pay for upcoming surgery bills. The boy's supports took to a website — indiegogo.com — to help raise money for Kevin's surgery.
