CALIFORNIA -- It took firefighters about an hour Thursday morning to pull a 24-year-old horse from a cold pond in Oakdale.
The Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Protection District said at about 8 a.m., fire crews found Sassy in a pond on the 13000 block of Horseshoe Road.
Modesto fire crews helped in the rescue as firefighters put a rope system together and used backboards as a ramp to get Sassy over the 3- to 4-foot shelf.
Once on dry land, Sassy could not stand, but was kept warm with blankets until a veterinarian arrived to tend to the horse.
It is unclear exactly how long Sassy had been in the water, however fire crews believe she may have been in the pond for up to six hours.
Sassy's condition was not released. The Stanislaus Consolidated battalion chief said he is hopeful for Sassy's recovery.
