Horse starved so badly it had to be put down in Union Parish, Louisiana

LOUISIANA -- Union Parish Sheriff Dusty Gates said detectives are investigating a case of animal cruelty involving a horse that was so malnourished “he had to be put down.”

Bastrop resident Carl Bershell turned himself in to Union Parish sheriff’s detectives Tuesday evening and was booked into the parish detention center on one count of cruelty to animals.

Bershell, 57, was released on a $5,000 bond, Sheriff Dusty Gates said.

The sheriff’s office was notified late Monday afternoon that a malnourished horse was nearly dead in a pasture just north of Marion along Bibby Road.

A veterinarian was called to the scene and made a determination that the animal needed “to be put down,” Gates said.

“Apparently there were photos taken of the horse several weeks ago showing the condition of the horse,” Gates said. “If we had been contacted at that time, he might could have been saved.”

A condition of Bershell’s bond was that he would surrender a second horse until his case is adjudicated, the sheriff said.

The second horse will be kept by a member of the Union Parish Humane Society.

"Any time you take responsibility of an animal, it's a job. It's something you have to tend to, make sure they're sheltered, watered, and fed," said Gates. "Just be aware of what you're doing. While the winter is here, the grass is not readily available like it normally is during the summer time. You have to keep watch of your animals, make sure they're nourished."
