Judge dismisses animal cruelty charge; orders 30 horses returned to abuser

IOWA -- A man has been given jail time and probation for charges related to the seizure of about 30 horses from his southeast Iowa farm.

The Daily Gate City in Keokuk reports 56-year-old Jeffrey L. Graber, of Donnellson, pleaded guilty recently to charges of failure to dispose of a dead animal’s body and interference with official acts.

An animal neglect charge was dismissed.

Graber was sentenced Tuesday to two days in jail and one year of unsupervised probation.

Authorities say the horses on Graber’s farm did not have proper food and shelter when they were removed in January.

A judge later ruled that the horses should be returned to Graber.

Graber will need to provide proof to county officials that a veterinarian is checking on the horses every 60 days.
