MAINE -- A York, Maine, woman is charged with a count of animal cruelty that alleges her dog, Henry, was so matted, he couldn't see, had difficulty walking and his ears were weighed down by snarls of matted fur.
Charged with the misdemeanor is Sandra Hewitt, 53, of 237 Ridge Road.
The charge, brought by Portsmouth's animal control officer, Bonnie Robinson, alleges that on Aug. 28 at 12:14 p.m., Hewitt "did neglect" Henry, a 9-year-old Lhaso Apso Bichon poodle mix, by not having him groomed.
As a result, it's alleged, the dog's eyes were "matted shut" and his movement was restricted.
The animal officer's report alleges the dog "needed to be completely shaved by a veterinarian with surgical blades to remove all the mats."
Police Lt. Darrin Sargent said the case was brought to police attention by a dog groomer, after Henry was brought to the groomer by members of Hewitt's family, while she was out of the area. The charge was brought a month later, following an investigation.
Hewitt's case remains pending in the Portsmouth Circuit Court.
