Newfield man, Jeffrey Wood, pleads guilty to animal cruelty

NEW YORK -- The Newfield man accused of shooting his dog, Lillie, in the head twice and leaving her outside overnight has pled guilty in Tompkins County Court.

Jeffrey M. Wood, 39, of Meadowbrook Lane, Newfield, pleaded guilty to aggravated cruelty to animals on Friday before Judge Joseph R. Cassidy, District Attorney Gwen Wilkinson announced Monday.

Wood was accused of shooting his dog early on the evening of Sept. 19. Lillie survived, and was found the next day in woods near the defendant's yard.

She underwent multiple surgeries and is now blind, according to the district attorney's office.

"This is definitely one of the more severe cases. We see all kinds of strange and disturbing things but this is definitely up there," explained humane investigator Joe Hoffer with the Tompkins County SPCA. "Especially being around this dog and seeing her demeanor even after the event. It really makes you wonder who can do something like this."

The sentencing date has not been announced by the court. Wood faces a maximum sentence of two years local incarceration, Wilkinson said.
