Police remove nearly 100 cats from home

ARIZONA -- Eighty-five cats were seized from a Glendale home on Tuesday morning. The animals, dead and alive, were reportedly found in deplorable conditions.

Glendale police say they got a call about bad smells coming from a home near 45th Avenue and Maryland, so they decided to do a welfare check on it.

Authorities reportedly found an elderly man living with 85 cats in a home covered in feces. There say there were some dead animals inside too.

According to police, the home is unfit to live in and a Hazmat  crews was called out to help remove the cats from the unsanitary conditions.

"They found cat feces throughout the home, it's hazardous to occupy. They found so much feces that it's in every part of this home, to the extent that it is almost 6 inches deep in some places," said Glendale Police Officer Tracey Breeden.

The animals are not in good condition, however, they weren't abused.

No, he did not beat or kick them. However, they were abused by an owner who refused to provide them with a clean, humane living environment. He abused them by denying them needed veterinary care when they got sick and suffered and died. They got sick, suffered and died BECAUSE OF HIM.

The elderly man gave up his rights to cats, surrendering them to the Arizona Humane Society.

The City of Glendale went out to the home because of the unsafe condition of the home.

The 58-year-old man is being charged with animal cruelty. A crisis team is trying to help him find temporary housing.
