Portland man, Taylor Issac Jenson, accused of strangling dog Christmas Eve, throwing it into tree

OREGON --  A 29-year-old Portland man spent Christmas in custody after arriving home drunk on Christmas Eve, strangling the family dog and throwing the animal into the Christmas tree, according to police and prosecutors.

Taylor Issac Jenson was booked into the downtown Portland jail about 11 p.m. on Wednesday, on allegations of second-degree animal abuse and fourth-degree assault.

Police were called to the Northeast Portland home at 10:35 p.m. Jenson's wife told Officers John Maul Jr. and Matthew Bigoni that her husband had arrived home intoxicated and got angry at her dog, according to court records.

Jenson picked up the Jack Russell Terrier-Chihuahua mix, began strangling it and threw it into the Christmas tree, deputy district attorney Samuel Leineweber wrote in a probable cause affidavit.

When Jenson's wife tried to stop her husband from hurting the dog, he pushed her down, the affidavit said.

Police noticed red marks and cuts on the face of Jenson's wife. His wife's 10-year-old daughter was home at the time, Leineweber wrote in the affidavit.

Jenson told police he was discharged from the U.S. Navy two months ago and was having a hard time re-adjusting to civilian life, the affidavit said. He had served in the Navy from 2008 through this year, according to court documents.

He told officers he got upset because of some news he'd received about his mother and felt his wife "loved the dog more than him,'' the affidavit said.

He told court officials that he drank two beers and had two shots of alcohol prior to Tuesday night's incident.

Police said the dog lay motionless for a short time and was later shaking and whining and did not want to be touched, according to the affidavit.

Jenson was released from Multnomah County Detention Center to pre-trial supervision on Friday and given a Jan. 13 court date.
