UNITED KINGDOM -- A dog owner from Wirral today spoke of his horror after his six-month-old puppy was left fighting for her life following a vicious attack.
Cocker Spaniel Jyla was left needing surgery after being savaged by two greyhounds while on a walk in Royden Park.
Owner Jack Woodworth is now calling for other dog owners to be on their guard after the brutal attack.
Jyla was being walked by Jack’s parents when the incident took place in the beauty spot, not far from West Kirby.
The 29-year-old told the ECHO: “The dogs were being walked and all of a sudden two greyhounds just bolted out of nowhere and started attacking the puppy. One started biting her and as they managed to get that one off the other came in and attacked her. Then when they got that one off the other one started again.
“She had two large puncture wounds on her side and the vet knocked her out straight away. She was nearly dead – when they were biting her they were picking her up and shaking the puppy. We are back at the vets nearly every day checking her out, dressing her wounds.”
One of Jyla’s wounds has become infected, adding to her misery as she battles to recover from the attack.
The puppy is one of four dogs owned by Jack’s family, who live in Wallasey. She has not been well enough to go out since the incident, so Jack is not sure how she will react around other dogs – but he is optimistic she will overcome the attack.
He is more concerned about the effect the attack may have had on his younger brother Josh, who has cerebral palsy.
He said: “The reason we got the dogs were for my little brother because he’s disabled, the dogs are his everything – he’s got more confidence and the dogs are a really important part of our family.”
Worried the dogs were going in for the “kill” on Jyla, Jack said he was also concerned young children could be attacked.
He said: “I’m concerned for kids, if that was a little child then these dogs could have killed them.”
Merseyside Police confirmed they had been informed of the incident, which happened on November 26, and Jack urged anyone with information to contact the force to help with their inquiries.
